The Hampton Quilt

Here it is….3791I think this is definitely one of my favorite quilts!  It is currently in the Keepsake Quilting Catalog.  They have  the pattern and kit.  It is a simply pieced quilt with some applique.  I did mine by hand (I know,  you think I am crazy).  The pattern is available in my website too (hardcopy or digital).  Click on the quilt below to go to my website.3791Hampton from Keepsake closeThe Handcrafted fabric line designed by Alison Glass is beautiful.  This line is by Andover Fabrics.handcrafted211I used 16 of the 18 prints as well as her Text print for the background.  IMG_0120_2I love this one so much, it is currently my phone case!Photo Sep 22, 10 29 08 AMI ended up with three couch pillows and another project in process.DSC_0089adjThe Hampton quilt was inspired by hotel carpet.  Scott and I were away for a weekend.  We were waiting for the elevator on the third floor.  I was staring at the floor.  Scott said “you see a quilt in the carpet, don’t you”?  He knows me so well!  That is exactly what I was seeing.  Well, the quit is named Hampton, want to guess where we were staying?DSC_0050I tried to take the quilt out to the park and get some pictures.  I am not so good with the camera.  Not sure if I will ever be.  I might need to get some help in that area.DSC_0055

Well, now you know the story of Hampton.  By the way, the wonderful modern quilting was done by Dana (check with me if you need her info, she is in Palmdale, Ca).  The quilt is out roaming in Southern California.  Maybe you will spot it in a quilt store.  If you see it, take a picture and share it with me.

It was a very interesting and amazing experience to film the instructional class.  I hope I get to do it again someday!  The people I worked with were absolutely great!4966_Marketing_Sewing_Machine_051_retouchedI learned so much about how things happen behind the camera.  _DSC1115_retouched

They really made me feel like a star!  This was on my dressing room door (how sweet).IMG_1969This was on the door to the filming studio.  They really did use a clapper board (I think that’s what you really call them).IMG_1979Here I am inside my dressing room.  I’m not very good at selfies, but I tried anyway.IMG_1089There was inspiration everywhere.  This is the fabric the curtains were made out of in my hotel room.IMG_1971This wall the wall paper.  I must admit, I starred at this for a while (thinking of quilt patterns, of course).IMG_1973I know this might seem crazy to some people, but I had never had room service before.  Well, I think I went to Denver on the first winter storm of the season.  I do not think the temp went above 20 degrees the entire time I was there.  One night after dinner, we walked to the car in –10 degrees.  I had never been in weather that cold before.  So, you can imagine that room service was quite enticing.  I was amused with the amount of ketchup that was sent up with my burger.IMG_1978When all the filming was done, I managed to get to the airport before the snow really hit, but once I was there it started coming down heavy.  IMG_1981We had to go outside to board the plane.IMG_1982I entered the plane with a little snow in my hair and on my clothes.  Then we sat for a bit (about an hour or so) while the plane was de-iced.  I have never been on a planed that needed de-icing.IMG_1983

This definitely was a trip of firsts!  Now all the editing and magic is done and the class is ready for you.  I hope you enjoy it.  I sure had fun with the whole adventure.

The Goddess Block Project–Intro and Block 1

I have something new to share!  I have decided to design and offer for FREE a block a week (for an undetermined length of time).

DSC_0173

How about a video Introduction to The Goddess Block Project?TGBP Intro

I present to you – Block 1, The New Year Star Block!

Block 1 Photo

Each block is designed using The Goddess Tool,it is available in a PDF form here (click on the Tool below): NIAHS-RulerTmeplate

You can always order an actual acrylic Tool on my website, Needle in a Hayes Stack.

The reason these blocks are designed using The Goddess Tool, is because there are many quilters who own this tool and I wanted to make sure you had plenty of blocks you could create.  I do not want you to think this tool is a one purpose tool.  It has many, many uses!

Here is the block in gray scale.  Click on the block below to download the printed instructions:

Want to watch a video about the block construction?  I did that too!

Now for the video for Block 1 – The New Year Star Block.  Click on the box below to watch.Block 1

I also have a video about general use of The Goddess Tool, just in case you want to check out all the uses for the tool.  Click here:  The Goddess Tool with background

I have been busy, can you tell?  I plan to share on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest too!  Share with all your quilting buddies.  FREE QUILT BLOCKS

Sometimes I will give you layouts or other color options or who knows what else.  Today it is another color way.  I used Handcrafted fabrics, designed by Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics.  I will continue to use these fabrics with the Dimples background for the sample blocks.  I used the Alison Glass Text print for my alternate block (I really watched the direction of the text with this block).  I was so worried about the text direction, that this block is actually a mirror image of the block I actually designed!

Block 1 - New Year Star Block

I hope you enjoy my give-away!  Keep watching for more.  My goal is to post by midnight each Wednesday.  I am excited to see what you do with these free blocks.  Send me pictures, please!  I am also excited to see what blocks I design in the future (I have a good amount already designed, but who knows what will come later).  I must go get stitching!

An App Quilt

An App Quilt?  What is the world is that, and why?  Well, there is be a special exhibit at Road to California in 2015.  The faculty were given a challenge to create a quilt that looks like an App.  I chose to use my Hayes Stack logo for the center of the quilt.FINAL-LOGO-JustHaystack
I printed up some background fabric (please test any new technique you decide to use before it is too late).  I will touch on that later.  I had approval from the powers at Road to use their logo, so I did.  I also used a small version of my Hayes Stack as well as some Downton Abbey words.  Since my classes will be Downton Abbey Mysteries, I thought that was appropriate.  I framed and backed the 36” x 36” quilt with batik.  Why?  Cuz I love batik!App Road Fabric
I found a block that has been referred to as The Road to California block.  I pieced the background with four of these blocks, using my printed fabrics.App Quilt for Road
Then, I quilted it!  Bound it! And….. washed it!  Yikes!  That printed (untested) fabric faded really bad.  Here is the fabric before washing.DSC_0135Well, I waited to long to start this project, so there was no starting over.  I decided I just needed to go with it.
DSC_0134Here it as after washing.DSC_0145And a close up!  Yep, it faded!  Once I had come to terms with the aged look of my quilt, I fell in love with it.DSC_0146Now I needed to get the logo on the quilt.  I enlarged my logo to be about 24” tall.DSC_0142I painted the needle so it would have a shadow on one edge.DSC_0144I traced the Hayes Stack shapes onto a bright yellow fabric and located my trusty glue stick.DSC_0147I tried gluing down the bottom shape and adding some netting.  I wasn’t sure at this point that my idea was going to work.  But, I pressed on.DSC_0148I stitched the thing into submission.DSC_0149I added the needle and stitched that down too.DSC_0150Then, I couched black yarn around each shape to enhance to outline.  I love couching on the Bernina.  I used the #43 foot and some clear thread.  That was the easiest and best part for me.DSC_0151May I present you with the Needle in a Hayes Stack App Quilt.  DSC_0155
I drove to Ontario, CA and delivered this on the day it was due.  Not a moment to spare.  Do work for deadlines?  I sure seem to.  Well, I am happy with the end product.  Look for it at Road.  Look for me too!

I Just Wanna Sew!

I have been so busy at my computer, I think my sewing machine forgot who I am!  Not good!

I have been loading a brand new website (wow, that takes time and brain power), I recently traveled to Denver to film a Craftsy class (more on that in the day to come), I have been getting ready for Road to California (I am such a lucky girl to be listed as faculty)!

I am starting to wonder if I remember how to sew.  I seem to think it is like riding a bike.  Let’s find out:

DSC_0090I am in love with the Handcrafted fabrics that Alison Glass designed.  I created a quilt called Hampton (story on that in a blog for January).  Hampton will be available on my new website as soon as it goes live, wish I could tell you exactly when that will be, but I don’t even know, soon, I hope.  Well, here is Hampton:DSC_0089I had left over fabric!  I am a lucky girl!  So, I decided to make another pillow (I have 3 included with the pattern).  I love to hand applique, so I just started in with the petal shape.  Well, I decided this set of applique petals needed to grow up into a quilt, not just a pillow.  I have no idea what the quilt will look like.  I usually have a complete design created in EQ7, but this time I’m gonna wing it and see what comes.I am sewing, sewing, sewing! I am happy! I haveDSC_0091 decided that since I have 16 fabrics in the center, I can make 16 blocks to go around that center.DSC_0092

I hope to get these made today and have more to share soon, as well as an idea of what I might do next.  This is as much as an adventure for me as it will be for you.  I hope you follow along and give me some suggestions too!DSC_0094
